Description

At the heart of this unit is The Last Masquerade, an original Halloween short story filled with mystery, atmosphere, and suspense. As students read, they encounter advanced vocabulary, complex grammar structures, and thought-provoking questions that challenge them to analyze language and meaning.

Students expand their vocabulary with a collection of advanced Halloween-themed words such as eerie, macabre, sinister, superstition, séance, and folklore, all presented with examples and contextual use.

Grammar is explored naturally through the story, focusing on narrative tenses, modals of speculation, conditionals, and passive voice, helping learners see how advanced grammar functions in real storytelling.

Activities push students beyond basic comprehension. Learners engage with literal, inferential, and debate-style questions, encouraging them to interpret the story, defend their opinions, and explore deeper themes.

Creative language practice keeps the lesson dynamic with role-plays, story rewrites, and reflective writing tasks. Students might transform the story into a romance, a comedy, or even a newspaper report, building flexibility in their language skills.

Listening and media literacy tasks encourage students to explore how sound, tone, and visuals create suspense, making this unit perfect for pairing with audio clips, short films, or dramatic readings.

Students also explore the history and cultural roots of Halloween, tracing its origins from ancient Celtic traditions to modern global celebrations, building intercultural awareness alongside language development.
